Are my disability benefits income?
There are two primary sources of disability income and they are treated differently for tax purposes:
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments are not reported as income on a tax return.
- Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is reported on form SSA-1099. The income may be partially taxable. Generally if SSDI is your only source of income, it is not taxable.
